Marlon Wayans made the exciting reveal on social media: “WE’RE BACK!!! After nearly 20 years, the Wayans brothers are finally going to give the fans what they’ve been asking for… a return to the SCARY MOVIE franchise!”
The Scary Movie series, which parodied horror classics like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, became a massive hit. The first film, directed by Keenen and co-written by the brothers, followed a group of teenagers targeted by a bumbling serial killer, with Anna Faris, Regina Hall, and Jon Abrahams rounding out the star-studded cast. The film opened with more than $42 million in its debut weekend, setting records for the biggest opening for an R-rated horror film and for a film directed by a Black filmmaker. It went on to gross over $278 million worldwide, making it one of the most successful comedy-horror films of its time.
Now, the Wayans brothers are reuniting to write an original script for the sixth installment of the Scary Movie series. They’ll be joined by Rick Alvarez, marking their first return to the franchise since Scary Movie 2 in 2001. This new installment will be produced by Miramax, with Paramount Pictures distributing the film worldwide. Filming is set to begin in 2025. Miramax CEO Jonathan Glickman expressed his excitement for the project, stating, “We are thrilled to reunite Scary Movie with the Wayans brothers, the brilliant creators behind the beloved franchise.”
In a statement, the Wayans brothers shared their enthusiasm for the return of Scary Movie, reflecting on the laughs the original films brought to audiences: “We remember people laughing in the aisles, and hope to see that happen again. We look forward to working with Jonathan Glickman and his team at the new Miramax to bring these laughs to theaters, where they belong.”
As for the original stars, Anna Faris, who appeared in Scary Movie and its sequels, has expressed interest in reprising her role as Cindy Campbell, though she hopes to work alongside Regina Hall, who played Brenda in the series. Faris told People in July that she’d love to team up with Hall again, calling her co-star “so much fun” to work with. Hall, for her part, has also shared her interest in a Scary Movie reunion, but with a modern twist, suggesting it shouldn’t just be a “traditional 20-year reunion.”
Fans are eagerly awaiting what the Wayans brothers will bring to the reboot, and whether the original cast will return to bring their iconic characters back to life for a new generation.
