Ariana Grande recently shared a special moment with her 99-year-old grandmother, Marjorie “Nonna” Grande, as they watched Wicked together. The singer, who portrays Glinda the Good in the Wicked movie, took a quick trip to her hometown of Boca Raton, Florida, to experience the film at the very theater she frequented as a child.
In an Instagram Story, Grande posted a photo of herself sitting alongside Nonna and her brother Frankie in a dimly lit movie theater, writing, “Flew to Boca for a day to watch with Nonna.” She also noted that they saw the film at “the movie theater I grew up going to every weekend,” and gave a shoutout to her boyfriend, Ethan Slater, who plays Boq in the movie, for capturing the moment.
Grande later shared a sweet video of Nonna smiling as she watched Grande’s musical number “Popular” on the big screen. “Thrilled to report when the sugar glider had her drum solo, Nonna exclaimed loudly, ‘Oh I LOVE that,’” the Grammy-winning singer added, reflecting on her grandmother’s joy during the scene.
Earlier this year, Grande’s Nonna made history by becoming the oldest artist ever to appear on the Billboard Hot 100 at the age of 98. She was featured on Grande’s song “Ordinary Things,” which debuted at No. 55 on the chart.
Grande stars alongside Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba, in Wicked, a cinematic adaptation of the iconic Broadway musical. The film, which explores events in Oz before Dorothy’s arrival, was directed by Jon M. Chu. After its release on Friday, Wicked raked in an impressive $162 million worldwide during its opening weekend, making it the third highest-grossing film of 2024, behind Deadpool & Wolverine and Inside Out 2.
