Georgia has fallen out of the provisional College Football Playoff field after the release of the second set of rankings on Tuesday night. The Bulldogs, now ranked No. 12, find themselves on the outside looking in, with No. 13 Boise State currently occupying the fifth-best conference champion spot in the 12-team bracket.
However, Georgia’s playoff hopes are far from over. The Bulldogs have a crucial game this Saturday against No. 7 Tennessee, and a victory would propel them back into the playoff race with just two weeks remaining in the regular season.
Oregon, which retained its No. 1 spot in the rankings, remains in position for a top playoff seed. Meanwhile, Georgia’s loss has moved Texas up to No. 2, with Ohio State holding steady at No. 3. The Big Ten continues to dominate, with four teams ranked in the top five, including No. 5 Indiana, which is on track to finish 11-1, potentially without making the Big Ten title game.
Ole Miss, fresh off its 28-10 victory over Georgia, surged to No. 11 in the rankings, climbing five spots. Meanwhile, Miami dropped to No. 9 after their upset loss to Georgia Tech, now sitting at No. 4 in the projected playoff field.
First-Round Byes:
Oregon
Texas
BYU
Miami
BYU, which secured a narrow 22-21 win over Utah, moved up three spots and will host Kansas in Week 12.
First-Round Matchups:
No. 12 Boise State at No. 5 Ohio State
No. 11 Ole Miss at No. 6 Penn State
No. 10 Alabama at No. 7 Indiana
No. 9 Notre Dame at No. 8 Tennessee
Should these matchups come to fruition, it’s likely that three of the four first-round games would be held at Big Ten stadiums. Tennessee’s ranking could change dramatically next week depending on their result at Georgia—either a significant rise with a win or a drop with a loss.
