As the results of the 2024 U.S. presidential election unfolded, world leaders and top officials responded with their reactions.
With former President Donald Trump leading the race against Vice President Kamala Harris and declaring victory, French President Emmanuel Macron congratulated Trump on X, stating he was ready to continue working together as they had during Trump’s first term, with mutual respect and ambition for peace and prosperity.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also congratulated Trump, calling it “history’s greatest comeback” and praising Trump’s return to the White House as a new beginning for America and the strengthening of the U.S.-Israel alliance. Other Israeli officials, including President Isaac Herzog and Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, joined in offering congratulations.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas wished Trump success, reaffirming Palestine’s commitment to peace and hope that the U.S. would continue supporting Palestinian aspirations under his leadership.
Iran’s government spokesperson, Fatemeh Mohajerani, downplayed concerns about Trump’s election, stating that there was little difference between him and Harris, adding that the country had already prepared for any challenges.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a longtime ally of Trump, celebrated his “enormous win,” describing it as a much-needed victory for the world. He expressed hope for a return to strong Hungarian-American political cooperation, particularly on issues like peace and immigration. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised Trump’s victory and looked forward to continued U.S. support for Ukraine under his leadership.
On the other hand, Russian officials took a more cautious approach. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia was not planning to congratulate Trump, pointing out the ongoing conflict with the U.S. In contrast, Russian Foreign Minister Maria Zakharova took to social media with comments about Harris and the election results, suggesting that those motivated by love for their country, not hatred, ultimately succeed.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko viewed Trump’s election as a victory for capitalism in contrast to Europe’s socialist direction. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte also expressed his desire to work with Trump to keep the alliance strong.
Other European leaders, including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, offered their congratulations and looked forward to strengthening their countries’ relationships with the U.S. under Trump.
Leaders from Turkey, Poland, Serbia, India, Pakistan, South Korea, and Taiwan also sent messages of congratulations, emphasizing cooperation and their hopes for strengthened relationships with the United States. Taiwan, in particular, thanked both Trump and Biden for their support, stressing the continued progress of Taiwan-U.S. relations.
