House of the Dragon Season 3: What We Know Up to This Point

House of the Dragon fans, we know you’re eagerly awaiting the epic Battle of the Gullet and Invasion of King’s Landing—but those thrilling events are still some time away. In the meantime, let’s dive into everything we know about Season 3 to whet your appetite for what’s coming next.

The Game of Thrones prequel was renewed for a third season in June, right before Season 2 premiered. Season 2 focused heavily on the divide between the Greens (Alicent, Aegon, Aemond) and the Blacks (Rhaenyra, Jacaerys, Rhaenys), as both sides prepared for the inevitable battles. Meanwhile, Daemon went on a separate journey, gathering an army at Harrenhal.

Season 1 wrapped up with key events that set the stage for what’s to come: the Triarchy’s agreement to help the Greens break Corlys’ blockade, Rhaenyra gaining new dragonriders, Larys and a wounded Aegon fleeing King’s Landing, Daemon swearing allegiance to Rhaenyra’s cause, and the intense plotting between Rhaenyra and Alicent to secure King’s Landing for the Blacks.

As production on Season 2 continues, here’s everything we’ve learned so far about Season 3, from behind-the-scenes details to what fans can expect in the coming episodes. We’ll continue to update this post with the latest news, including intel, photos, trailers, and key art, to keep you up to date on all things House of the Dragon.

What to Expect From Season 3

Although HBO hasn’t released an official Season 3 synopsis yet, the show ended Season 2 with the lead-up to one of the biggest battles in Fire & Blood. Showrunner Ryan Condal confirmed that the Battle of the Gullet will take place “very shortly” after the show returns. “We are building to that event,” Condal said in August 2024. “It should be the biggest thing we’ve pulled off, and we want to give it the time and space it deserves to excite and satisfy the fans.”

However, not everyone agrees with this vision. Fire & Blood author and House of the Dragon executive producer George R.R. Martin publicly criticized the decisions made regarding the Blood and Cheese storyline, particularly the exclusion of Maelor, a character from the book not yet introduced in the TV series.

Returning Cast Members for Season 3

While there’s no official confirmation yet, we expect the core cast members to return for Season 3, including:

Olivia Cooke

Matt Smith

Emma D’Arcy

Tom Glynn-Carney

Ewan Mitchell

Phia Saban

Fabien Frankel

Sonoya Mizuno

Matthew Needham

Bethany Antonia

Harry Collett

Steve Toussaint

However, since Rhaenys met her end in Season 2, it’s unlikely that Eve Best will return in any major role.

New Faces for Season 3

Details about who will join the cast for Season 3 are still under wraps, but we’ll be sure to update you as soon as more information comes in.

Release Date for House of the Dragon Season 3

As of now, there is no official release date for Season 3. However, Season 1 debuted in August 2022, and Season 2 premiered in June 2024. Condal mentioned that pre-production for Season 3 will begin in the fall of 2024, with shooting expected to start in early 2025.

How Many Episodes Will Season 3 Have?

We don’t know the exact number of episodes for Season 3 yet. Season 1 had 10 episodes, and Season 2 reduced the count to eight. Condal has stated that Season 3 will likely follow the same pacing as Season 2, so eight episodes is a strong possibility. “I anticipate the cadence of the show from a dramatic storytelling perspective will remain the same from Season 2 on,” he shared in August 2024.
