James Van Der Beek Reflects One Month After Revealing Colorectal Cancer Diagnosis

James Van Der Beek is opening up about his health journey one month after revealing his Stage 3 colorectal cancer diagnosis.

In his first live television interview since the announcement, Van Der Beek spoke with Good Morning America co-anchor Robin Roberts on Tuesday. Reflecting on his experience, the 47-year-old actor shared, “Physically, I’m great. I’m feeling really good emotionally. It’s a lot… it’s really a ride.

Van Der Beek, known for his roles in Dawson’s Creek and Varsity Blues, initially shared his diagnosis on Instagram in November, explaining that he was receiving treatment and focusing on his overall health like never before. Though he has not disclosed specific details about his diagnosis, which he received in August 2023, or his treatment plan, his public announcement has brought attention to the rising rates of colorectal cancer among younger people.

Over the past decade, while cases of colorectal cancer have decreased in adults over 55 due to screening efforts, there has been an alarming increase in diagnoses among those under 55. The American Cancer Society reports that colon cancer is now the leading cause of cancer death among men under 50, and the second leading cause in women of the same age group.

The 2020 death of actor Chadwick Boseman, who passed away from colon cancer at the age of 43, further highlighted the growing issue. Colorectal cancer, which originates in the colon or rectum, is the fourth most common cancer in the U.S. and ranks as the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

By sharing his story, Van Der Beek hopes to raise awareness of colorectal cancer and the importance of early screenings. The CDC recommends colorectal cancer screenings begin at age 45, although earlier screenings may be necessary for those with certain risk factors, such as a family history of colorectal cancer or conditions like inflammatory bowel disease.

Even without symptoms, anyone at risk should discuss screening with their healthcare provider. Common symptoms of colorectal cancer can include changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool, diarrhea, constipation, or unexplained weight loss.

Van Der Beek will also be participating in The Real Full Monty, a two-hour special airing on December 9, which features celebrities like Anthony Anderson, Taye Diggs, and Bruno Tonioli, all of whom have been affected by cancer. During the special, the stars will rehearse a strip-tease dance to raise awareness for prostate, testicular, and colorectal cancers. The program will air on FOX at 8 p.m. ET/PT and will be available for streaming on Hulu the following day.
