Microsoft is introducing a new AI-powered feature called Rewrite to its classic Notepad app. According to The Verge, the feature is currently available in preview for Windows Insiders, allowing users to rewrite sentences, adjust the tone, and change the length of text directly within Notepad.
To use Rewrite, Windows Insiders can simply highlight the text they want to modify, right-click on it, or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+I. A dialogue box will appear, offering AI-generated suggestions to rewrite the text, with options to adjust the length, tone, and format before replacing the original text. If users prefer to write without AI assistance, they can easily disable the feature in the app’s settings.
In addition to Notepad, Microsoft is also rolling out AI features for its Paint app. The new Generative Fill feature allows users to enhance or modify images by selecting an area and describing what they’d like to add. Similarly, the Generative Erase tool lets users remove unwanted elements from photos and drawings using an eraser-like brush.
It took over forty years for spell check to make its way into Notepad, but now, AI can rewrite and even paint—showing just how quickly Microsoft is embracing artificial intelligence to transform its classic apps.
