President-elect Donald Trump has outlined an extensive agenda he plans to implement immediately upon his swearing-in for a second term on January 20. Some initiatives, like tax cuts, will require Congress’s cooperation, while others will begin with executive orders.
Gender-Affirming Healthcare Ban
Trump intends to issue an executive order banning federal funding for gender-affirming care through programs like Medicare, TRICARE, and the Veterans Health Administration. In a social media post, he vowed to end federal agency support for gender transition-related programs and asked Congress to prohibit funding for these procedures nationwide. Additionally, he proposed allowing individuals to sue medical professionals who perform such procedures on minors.
Immigration and Mass Deportations
On day one, Trump has pledged to start a large-scale deportation effort, aiming to remove millions of undocumented immigrants. His plan includes reactivating policies like “Remain in Mexico” and prioritizing the deportation of undocumented individuals with criminal records. Trump may also employ the National Guard and military for support, a strategy that some economists warn could impact GDP and cost billions.
Tariffs to Boost U.S. Manufacturing
Trump plans to impose tariffs on foreign imports to encourage U.S. manufacturing. He has specifically threatened tariffs on Mexico if it does not curb the flow of migrants and control imports from China. Economists caution that such tariffs could raise consumer goods prices and risk a trade war.
Expanding Oil Drilling
Trump is set to fast-track permits to increase U.S. oil drilling. He has pledged to dismantle Biden-era climate policies, including the Inflation Reduction Act and fuel efficiency standards, while halting offshore wind projects and withdrawing the U.S. from the Paris Climate Agreement.
Resolving the Ukraine Conflict
Trump has promised to broker a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia, claiming he could achieve this within 24 hours of taking office. He has been critical of U.S. military aid to Ukraine and suggests he may cut funding for the conflict if it continues.
Sanctions on Iran
Lastly, Trump aims to implement new sanctions on Iran, targeting its nuclear ambitions and regional influence. While previous sanctions did not curb Iran’s nuclear activities, Trump intends to renew efforts to pressure Tehran without congressional approval.
These policies reveal Trump’s vision for immediate change, focusing on national security, economic reform, and a shift in foreign relations. However, the feasibility and impacts of these initiatives will be closely watched.
