For those new to the world of climbing, it can appear both daunting and perilous. But scaling the planet’s highest peaks doesn’t require the skill set of Free Solo’s Alex Honnold. It’s attainable for beginners with little more than sturdy legs, strong lungs, and determination.
Aconcagua: The Towering Giant
Take, for example, the towering Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Americas. Reaching 22,838 feet, this Argentine giant, dominating the vast Andes range, surpasses the elevation of any mountain in the continental United States by nearly 10,000 feet. Despite its imposing height, Aconcagua’s standard route is often likened to a challenging hike, especially in favorable conditions. Climbers must bear the weight of heavy loads up steep slopes, but typically without the need for ropes, crampons, ice axes, or other specialized “climbing gear.” There are no technical climbing sections either.
Attainable Heights: Aconcagua for Beginners
For avid hikers with camping experience, Aconcagua offers a feasible goal — perhaps the highest elevation on Earth reachable without technical climbing skills.
The Legendary Expedition Begins
My father and I embarked on a journey up this mountain in January, accompanied by my friend Damian Benegas of Benegas Brothers Expeditions. Damian, along with his twin brother Willie, are legendary Argentine guides and former professional climbers. Together, they have summited Mount Everest 20 times and Aconcagua over 100 times, in addition to conquering numerous other peaks across all seven continents.
Preparation in the Picturesque Mendoza
Our journey began with a flight to the picturesque mountain town of Mendoza, renowned for its world-class wineries, fine dining, and spas. Here, we spent a few days preparing our gear for the adventure.
Acclimatization at Las Cuevas
From Mendoza, a three-hour drive west led us to Las Cuevas, a small mountain village just outside Aconcagua National Park on the Chilean border. Situated at 10,400 feet, Las Cuevas provided the ideal location for acclimatization before our Aconcagua attempt.
Trekking to Base Camp
Once adjusted to the higher altitude, we rendezvoused with mule drivers outside the park to send the majority of our gear ahead on pack mules. Upon entering Aconcagua National Park, it took us two days and 18 miles of hiking to reach Base Camp, tracing the sprawling dried riverbed of the Horcones River valley as the mountains loomed on either side.
Base Camp: Gateway to the Summit
Nestled in this lofty alpine valley, at the foot of the tallest peak in the Americas, lies a tent village established by numerous outfitters, complete with coffee shops, bars, and even the world’s highest-altitude art gallery.
Ascending with “Rotations”
While some groups ascend the mountain in four or five days, progressing from Base Camp to Camps I, II, III, and the summit in continuous pushes, we followed a series of “rotations,” ascending and descending from Base Camp over 10 days.
Acclimatization and the Climb
This method played a crucial role in acclimatization, reducing the risk of acute mountain sickness (AMS). Many climbers on Aconcagua rush their ascent and suffer from altitude-related illnesses, jeopardizing their chances of reaching the summit.
Summit Day: A Conquest of Heights
On summit day, we arose at 4 a.m. to commence our climb by 5:30. Progressing up the mountain, we zigzagged along steep snow slopes and traversed narrow ridgelines.
Awe-Inspiring Beauty at the Top
Though clouds obscured much of the view from the top, standing atop one of the world’s highest mountains evoked an unparalleled sense of achievement.
Timing and Recommendations
The optimal time to tackle Aconcagua is during the peak of the Argentine summer, spanning from December to February. However, the full climbing season extends from November to mid-March.
Prepare Physically and Mentally
The ascent of Aconcagua demands more than just physical prowess; it requires mental fortitude and unwavering determination. Begin your preparations well in advance, focusing on building endurance, strength, and resilience.
Endurance Training: Long hikes, trail runs, and cardio workouts will condition your body for the sustained effort needed during the climb. Aim to build up your stamina over several months, gradually increasing the duration and intensity of your training sessions.
Strength and Core Work: Aconcagua’s challenging terrain demands strong muscles, particularly in your legs and core. Incorporate exercises such as squats, lunges, and planks into your routine to build the necessary strength to tackle steep inclines and rocky paths.
Altitude Acclimatization: One of the biggest challenges of Aconcagua is its extreme altitude. Acclimatization is key to avoiding altitude sickness and ensuring a successful summit bid. Plan to spend time at various high-altitude locations prior to your climb, gradually ascending to higher elevations to allow your body to adjust.
Gear Up for Success: Having the right gear can make all the difference between a smooth ascent and a challenging ordeal. Here’s a rundown of essential equipment for your Aconcagua expedition:
High-Quality Boots: Invest in sturdy, well-fitted boots with excellent ankle support to navigate the rocky terrain comfortably.
Layered Clothing: Weather on Aconcagua can vary from scorching sun to biting cold. Dress in layers to regulate your body temperature and stay dry.
Quality Sleeping Bag and Tent: Prepare for cold nights at base camps with a warm, insulated sleeping bag and a reliable, durable tent.
Technical Gear: Harness, helmet, crampons, ice axe—ensure you have the necessary technical equipment for glacier travel and steep sections.
Plan Your Route and Logistics
Several routes lead to Aconcagua’s summit, each with its challenges and highlights. Research the options and choose one that aligns with your skill level and preferences. Popular routes include the Normal Route, Polish Glacier Route, and Vacas Valley Route.
Permit and Logistics: Obtain the necessary permits well in advance, as Aconcagua National Park has strict regulations. Consider hiring a reputable guide service to handle logistics, such as base camp facilities, mules for gear transport, and medical support.
Acclimatization Strategy: Most climbers follow a gradual ascent profile, spending time at different base camps to acclimatize. The Plaza de Mulas and Plaza Argentina base camps are common starting points for the Normal Route and Polish Glacier Route, respectively.
Summit Day: The Ultimate Challenge
The final push to Aconcagua’s summit is both exhilarating and demanding. Here are some tips to maximize your chances of success.
Start Early: Begin your ascent in the pre-dawn hours to take advantage of stable snow conditions and avoid afternoon storms.
Pacing and Hydration: Maintain a steady, sustainable pace to conserve energy. Stay hydrated and nourished, even if you don’t feel hungry or thirsty at high altitudes.
Mind Over Matter: As fatigue sets in and the thin air makes each step a challenge, focus on your mental strength. Visualize your success, draw inspiration from the stunning vistas around you, and take one step at a time.
The Summit: A Moment of Triumph
Reaching the summit of Aconcagua is a monumental achievement—an affirmation of your dedication, perseverance, and love for adventure. As you stand atop this legendary peak, take a moment to soak in the breathtaking views of the Andean peaks stretching into the horizon. In the end, mastering the highest peak in the Americas is not just about reaching the summit; it’s about the journey of self-discovery, resilience, and the camaraderie forged with fellow climbers along the way. May this blueprint for success inspire you to embark on your own Aconcagua adventure and write your name among the bold and fearless who have conquered its formidable heights.
